I just wrapped up week 23 of my marathon training program. I am so excited to say that I only have one more long run before I start to taper. I may have been a little nuts this past week. I took the day off on Tuesday to get my 20 mile run in because I wanted to spend the weekend decorating for Christmas. Of course, we would get 5 inches of snow on Tuesday! We don’t typically see that much snow so soon in the season. I was left with no choice but to hit up the treadmill. I didn’t want to have to worry about slipping and sliding for 20 miles on snowy streets. Prior to Tuesday, the most I have run on a treadmill was 8 miles. They call it the “dreadmill” for a reason!
So, off to the gym I went to run 20 miles on the treadmill. I have been doing interval training for my long runs and couldn’t figure out how to set the treadmill to do interval runs. So, this was the most annoying part of my run. I had to manually change my speed to run 3 minutes and walk 1 minute. Netflix was my best friend that day. I ended up binge watching The Sinner. I got in 5 and half episodes before my run was over.
If you find yourself having to train for a long run on the treadmill, don’t forget your phone charger. My phone was about to die, so of course, I ran out to the car to grab it. I wasn’t going to suffer through 10 more miles with no entertainment.
I had bought a Nathan Hydration back pack. I used it for the first time on this run. I loved it. A little secret that a friend taught me was to suck all of the air out of the pack so that you don’t feel the water sloshing during your run. It worked out perfectly for me. I did chafe a little on my back, so I would recommend that you use your body glide on your back to prevent the chafing.
The silver lining to having to do this run at the gym, was being able to sit in the hot tub after my run!
